The Supervision Policy outlines how Northside Christian College meets its duty of care to protect students from foreseeable harm. Supervision is a core professional responsibility for all teaching staff and requires more than physical presence — it demands active, vigilant and proactive engagement with students and their environment.
Teachers are held to a high standard of care and act in loco parentis while students are under the College’s care. This includes identifying and managing risks, positioning themselves strategically, monitoring student behaviour, and intervening early to prevent injury or incidents. Duty of care is non-delegable and applies before school, during recess and lunch, after school and throughout the school day.
The policy provides clear expectations for yard duty, area-specific supervision, punctual handovers, use of safety equipment, and incident recording. Staff must remain on duty until relieved and must not leave students unsupervised. Clear procedures apply for different areas of the campus, car park supervision, wet weather, and high-risk environments.
Supervision also plays a critical role in child safety, inclusion of students with disability, and cultural safety. By consistently applying active supervision practices, staff help create a safe, supportive and orderly learning environment for all students.
